In order to qualify for Entrepreneur's Hot 100, companies
were required to meet the following criteria:
- The founder is actively involved in daily operations and
owns a controlling interest in the business.
- The business was founded no earlier than 1999.
- Annual sales for 2001 exceeded $1 million.
- The company meets the SBA's definition of a small business,
based on the number of employees and sales figures. These
numbers vary according to the particular industry.
Entrepreneur also noted that Access Worldwide was founded
as a one-man operation out of Langston's apartment, funded
by $20,000 from family, friends and credit lines. Within
two years, the company had expanded to ten employees, moved
to a prime location near Hartsfield Atlanta International
Airport, and had opened a Midwest sales office in Kansas
City, MO. Gross revenues in 2001 were more than $1.6 million. Atlanta-based Access Worldwide provides

by the Atlanta Business Chronicle.

The publication then ranked qualifying companies by
a mathematical growth index formula. Access Worldwide
is ranked Number 20. In an article demonstrating
the remarkable growth of five of the Pacesetter companies,
the Atlanta Business
Chronicle described how Access Worldwide was founded
as a one-man operation out of Langston's apartment,
funded by family, credit lines and a cashed-out 401(k).
